National Award of Government of India for Science Communication

Receiving National Award of Government of India for the outstanding efforts of Science communication through books, magazines and print media in a special function on National Science Day (28th Feb. 2014) at Vidnyan Bhawan, New Delhi with the hands of Padmashree K. Vijayraghavan, Secretary DBT. Dr. T. Ramasami, Secretary, DST and DG, CSIR; Dr. B. P. Singh, Head NCSTC, Dr. D. K. Pandey, Scientist, NCSTC and many others were present on the stage.

Comet in March 2013

As 2013 begins, there are two comets to get excited about. One is Comet PANSTARRS, which will be brightest in March 2013. The other is Comet ISON, which might become a daylight comet in late 2013. Although a comet’s movement in our sky can be predicted, its brightness cannot be. It’s too early to know whether Comet PANSTARRS or Comet ISON – the two exciting comets of 2013 – will dazzle or fizzle. But these two are worth watching!

तरंगणारा साबण

आंघोळ करताना बुळबुळीत झालेली साबणाची वडी हातातून सटकून बादलीतल्या पाण्यात पडल्याचं तुम्ही कधी अनुभवलं आहे का? जर अनुभवलं असेल तर हातातून सटकलेली साबणाची वडी बादलीतल्या पाण्यात पडल्यावर तरंगते का बुडते? आणि जर तुम्ही हे अनुभवलं नसेल तर मग एक प्रयोग करून बघा. आंघोळीसाठी वापरात असलेली साबणाची वडी बादलीभर पाण्यात टाका. तुम्हाला असं आढळेल की, साबणाची वडी थेट बादलीच्या तळाशी जाते.

नेमकी हीच गोष्ट केरळमधल्या थ्रिसुर जिल्ह्यातल्या कत्तुर या लहानशा गावात राहाणाऱ्या सी. ए. व्हिन्सेंट या व्यक्तीच्या लक्षात आली. कत्तुर गाव करूवन्नुर नदीच्या काठावर वसलेलं आहे. गावातले लोक अंघोळीला, कपडे धुवायला याच नदीवर जातात. नदीवर अंघोळ करताना बुळबुळीत झालेली साबणाची वडी हातातून सटकून तळाशी जाते आणि मग नवीन साबणाची वडी विकत आणेपर्यंत सगळ्या कुटुंबाला साबण न वापरताच अंघोळ करावी लागते. गावातल्या लोकांची आर्थिक परिस्थिती बेताची असल्याने ताबडतोब साबणाची वडी विकत घेणं ही त्यांच्या दृष्टीने न परवडणारी गोष्ट आहे. धडपड्या स्वभावाच्या व्हिन्सेंट यांनी आपल्या गावकऱ्यांची ही समस्या सोडविण्याच्या दृष्टीने प्रयोग करायला सुरुवात केली……..
